The Ancient Siam Civilization of Wat Phra Mongkhon Bophit
The viharn of the temple had to be rebuilt and renovated several times. During the Ayutthaya period it was struck by lighting once and in 1767 the Burmese set it on fire. The palladium Buddha image of Ayutthaya during it's reign was damaged but could be repaired. Today Luang Phor Mongkhonbobhit, an U-thong and Sukhothai-style image is entirely covered with gold leaf. Only downside about visiting this viharn is the masses of people and the hectic atmosphere.
