Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong
This is an important and ancient temple in Chiang Rai, that existed long before the founding of the city. It is believed that Praya Ruen Kaeo had a chedi built here in 940 to house a portion of Buddha's relicts. While one portion is kept here, the others are located at Wat Phra That Doi Tung and Wat Phra That Chom Kitti. In front of the main building is the octagonal chedi built in 1864 with a Buddha statue in Maravijaya pose. To the side of the temple are the 108 city pillars of Chiang Rai, arranged according to Lanna traditional beliefs with a combination of Buddhist and Hindu ideology. A beautiful and important temple which deserves a lot of time to visit it.
