Wat Phra That Doi Wao
After we visited Wat Phra That Doi Tung we continued to drive along a narrow and winding road north and had great views into the territory of Myanmar until we came to some border checkpoints and the way down to Mae Sai. The main activity in Mae Sai is shopping but we wanted to visit Wat Phra That Doi Wao. The chedi here, which offers great views into Myanmar and the mountains, was built to contain strands of Buddha's hair. It was built in 179 B.C. is is therefore one of the oldest shrines, next to Phra That Doi Tung. Little tip for visiting: the stairway up the hill is a real killer, so don't feel bad and just take the motorcycle taxi for 10 Baht! The temple buildings on the base of the mountain are relatively new but still worth visiting. That is also where the markets start.
