Wat Viengsa

Wat Viengsa

Wat Viengsa (Wiang Sa) in the district with the same name was one of those temples which turned into a long and enjoyable visit for us. We came here to pay our respect to the Ayutthaya-style Phra Pratan Buddha image and the abbot of the temple came to see us. He even had the yellow robes of the Buddha images removed so we could take better images of the Buddha itself. Something we have never experienced before. After presenting us with some Buddha amulets he gave us a guide which showed us the rest of the temple, including some hidden treasures back in the rain forest. Ancient dwellings and replicas of the Hindu gods Shiva, Vishnu and Phra Narai were hidden away amongst the trees and a huge but already dead python was in our path, which showed us that we better not go back there alone. The abbot also told us about a donation box which someone wanted to steal a few months ago, only to find himself in a serious accident down the road from the temple.
